It is always important to make a good first impression when using online dating – and one of the best opportunities to do so is when messaging a prospective partner.

When people find another user they like the look of, a well-constructed greeting could be key to setting the right tone for any correspondence the pair enjoy going forward.

As such, it is important individuals put some effort into the first message, as failure to do so could make them appear too laid back or uninterested.

While first messages should not tell a person's whole life story, they can be engaging, informative and even entertaining.

Examples of poor first messages have been given by Gena Kaufman who, writing for Glamour, explained she hates it when online daters are too vague in their correspondence.

"Messages are getting shorter and shorter, culminating in a message composed of two letters. For real. It's so lazy and impersonal I could scream," she added.
