A former solider trekked 1,287 miles over the course of three months in order to raise money for a military charity.

Martin Fletcher walked from Land's End to John O'Groats and collected around £2,000 for charity Veterans Aid UK (VAUK) along the way, the Lancashire Telegraph reports.

The 41-year-old took his two dogs – three-year-old Rhodesian ridgebacks Jess and Tara – along for company as he battled freezing temperatures and inclement weather in order to complete the challenge.

Mr Fletcher stated: "The walk sometimes got quite dangerous due to farmland with fields full of cows [and] calves, which resulted in us getting harassed."

From 1987 to 1993, he served in the Queen's Lancashire Regiment and so he has seen first hand what armed forces members go through on a daily basis.

He chose VAUK because of the work the charity does in helping veterans who struggle after returning to civilian life.
