First dates should be short and sweet, one expert has claimed.

Peter Spalton, personal dating coach and founder of thedatingdoctor.co.uk, noted heading out for a coffee at lunchtime on a weekday is the ideal way to meet up initially.

He added the beauty of this type of arrangement is that it has a natural endpoint and so people do not have to worry about when it is time to go.

"A drink is good – an hour absolute maximum. If you like them you should really know within quarter of an hour anyway," Mr Spalton observed.

In terms of meeting individuals online, he said it is important to try and push for a face-to-face get-together as soon as possible.

There is no point in joining such a service just to build up an email correspondence with people, regardless of how one may like them.

However, Mr Spalton does suggest having a short phone call before a date.
