Over 50 per cent of office relationships get underway after a person puts a flirty X on the end of a message.

On top of this, 90 per cent of women and 85 per cent of men think receiving an X – which equals an electronic kiss – ahead of a first date increases the chance of intimacy.

Indeed, 86 per cent of respondents said they use X's when sending colleagues emails.

The findings highlight how people may be able to improve their chances of being successful in the dating world if they adopt a slightly more flirty tone.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, 28-year-old online dating website user Denise McCallum admitted she had no problem sticking an X on the end of a text.

"Emails and texts allow you to become much more intimate with a person than you would be either in person or on the phone," she added.
