AA Veterans' Support NI (AAVSNI) is celebrating after it collected over £2,700 from Armed Forces Day.

The Northern Ireland-based group was set up by former Ranger Andy Allen, who lost both of his legs and was blinded while on a tour of Afghanistan in 2008.

Speaking to the Carrick Times, he stated he wanted to thank everyone who came along, donated and supported the initiative.

AAVSNI – which was only created at the start of the year – is hoping to build a respite centre that will cater for injured ex-service personnel.

"We got great feedback from local people regarding the respite centre and raised £2,763 for the charity through proceeds from the stall and donations," Mr Allen remarked.

Stephen Morgan, director of fundraising at the charity, observed he is keen to hear the opinions of ex-servicemen and women to see what provisions they would like to see in such a building.
