A special Help for Heroes (H4H) rugby shirt will be sported by Whitehaven RL's players when they take to the field against Gateshead in an upcoming fixture.

Delivery of the strips has been taken with the help of members of the Phoenix Youth Project from Frizington Youth Centre, local newspaper the News and Star reports.

The kit is being supplied by manufacturer O'Neills, which has made a special effort to keep the costs of the tops down.

Being sold at Billy Rudd's Whitehaven Embroidery shop, the special shirts retail at £40 for adults and £35 for juniors – with ten per cent of the proceeds going to H4H.

The move follows on from Haven's successful fundraising efforts in 2011, which saw them generate more than £3,000 for the armed forces charity.

Members of the Phoenix Youth Project have been getting into rugby activities after being hosted at Haven's recent match against South Wales by club sponsor NMP.

Gary McKeating, head of socio economics for NMP, said: "The group were an absolute delight to host at the match."
