A special 4×4 challenge raising thousands of pounds for soldiers injured while fighting for their country has got underway.

The challenge will see a number of 4×4 vehicles transport a total of 120 people along a 2,000-mile journey that retraces the steps of the Allied invasion through Europe during the second world war, the BBC reports.

More than £170,000 has already been generated by the event, with proceeds to be donated to armed forces charity Help for Heroes.

The tour – which first took place in 2010 and was established by Keith Bowen and his son – will see participants travelling from Littlecote House Hotel in Hungerford and make their way across France and end up at Berchtesgaden, the alpine retreat used by Adolf Hitler.

Mr Bowen said: "I'm supposed to be retired and enjoying life, instead this has become a full-time job. But I don't mind because I really enjoy it."
