The ability of online dating to bring kindred spirits together has been proven once again, as two people who met via the web have decided to tie the knot.

Michael Stokes and Jean Richmond walked down the aisle after a courtship that began on the internet, with the duo claiming they simply clicked when they began conversing on-screen, the Huddersfield Daily Examiner reports.

And the marriage has proven internet dating is not the preserve of the young, with both individuals being of retirement age.

Mr Stokes said he logged on in order to find some companionship and had no idea he would fall for someone he met through the medium – until he met Jean.

He stated: "It's given me a new lease of life. It's wonderful really."

The pair began talking on the phone after initially messaging each other on the service, before the conversations progressed to trips between their hometowns of Huddersfield and Mablethorpe.
