A man is recovering from having a concrete block inserted into his body after a melon-sized tumour was removed.

Marek Barden is a church worker who lives in Bristol and had treatment for a 1.5 kg cancerous growth.

He had to have the lining of his left lung, six ribs and part of his diaphragm removed during the operation and a 25 cm square acrylic cement panel has been used as part of the reconstruction process.

"I consider myself the bionic man because of my concrete panel. I went into hospital prepared to die, but I'm a fighter and I'm stubborn," Mr Barden remarked.

The operation took over six hours and three surgeons had to be involved because of the complexity of the procedure.

It's crazy to think about what is possible these days in medicine and Mr Barden stated it is weird feeling the concrete under his skin.
