A group of around 500 bikers has raised over £3,000 for the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) The Soldier's Charity.

Bucket collections and a D-Day memorial bike ride were carried out in order to get as much money as possible for the good cause, the Chelmsford Weekly News reports.

A cheque was given over by Terry Youngs and his comrades in Colchester town centre on Saturday (April 28th).

Mr Youngs, who organised the bike ride from Merville Barracks in Colchester to Whitehouse Farm in Rettendon, has plans to expand it next year and charge those taking part on two-wheelers for the privilege.

Since being set up 66 years ago, ABF The Soldier's Charity has sought to provide financial assistance to current and ex-servicemen and women and their families.

It aims to raise £14 million a year by 2015, which would represent a 100 per cent increase on the amount it currently receives from charitable donations.
