Some 72 per cent of people use online dating and social media websites to try to find love.

This is according to research carried out by myvouchercodes.co.uk, which polled 1,899 individuals as part of the study.

A total of 59 per cent of online daters are utilising Twitter and Facebook in an effort to make their searches for a partner more successful.

Mark Pearson, chairman at myvouchercodes.co.uk, said: "Dating via social media can feel a lot safer, especially with the presence of mutual friends online."

However, he added some people may prefer a more private approach that does not involve acquaintances.

Individuals should maintain an open mind when seeking love online, as they cannot be sure where they will find their Mr or Mrs Right.

The first step should be creating a snappy profile though, as this will offer them the chances to showcase their qualities in a good light.
