A man is aiming to run, cycle and swim 1,000 miles in 2012 in order to raise money for a military charity.

Mike Jackson, whose son-in-law Colour Sergeant Kevin Charles Fortuna died in Afghanistan in 2011, is hoping to collect £10,000 for Help for Heroes, BBC News reports.

He will be taking part in a variety of challenges in Colchester in an effort to receive as much sponsorship as possible.

Mr Jackson has already completed 400 miles and so his actual final total may be much higher than the original target he set himself.

"Kev gave his life for our country, so the least I can do is give a year of my life to raise as much money as I can," he remarked.

Last year, Mr Jackson along with other family members managed to collect £4,000 for the armed forces charity, which was co-founded by Bryn and Emma Parry in 2007.
