St Dunstan's has changed its name to Blind Veterans UK.

The charity – which is the oldest organisation giving out assistance of this type to blind and partially-sighted military personnel – offers rehabilitation services for those hurt in action.

Andrew Jones, Blind Veterans UK's director of fundraising and communications, noted it is committed to "providing caring, collaborative lifelong assistance to blind veterans and their families".

He added there are still in excess of 50,000 people who could be reached by the charity, which helped out 650 new veterans in 2011 and has over 5,000 members in the UK.

Celebrations took place in Llandudno, Sheffield and Brighton as a bomb disposal robot and helicopter were on hand to unveil the new name in dramatic fashion.

Mr Jones added the change in moniker is a better reflection of what the group – which has been around since 1915 – does to help people.
