The Quarry Bank Royal British Legion's (RBL's) annual poppy appeal has managed to draw in over £29,000.

This is a record amount for the group – which is located in the West Midlands – and tops the figure from the previous year, the Stourbridge News reports.

Gloria Donovan, events co-ordinator and fundraiser for the branch, described the result as "absolutely amazing".

"People have been so generous despite all the problems going on. All the British Legions have done very, very well this time," she added.

As well as 22 volunteers taking to the street to collect money for the armed forces charity, a special concert was held.

A new award has also been introduced by the group for an outstanding achievement – the Charles Scott Memorial Trophy – which is named in honour of a former collector.

The RBL has been helping current and ex-servicemen and women since 1921 and it looked to raise £90 million in 2011.
