Advancements in mobile dating may make it easier for singletons to find love.

According to research carried out Northwestern University – which was founded in Chicago in 1851 – it is a great way for people to find out if there is a spark.

Eli Finkel, associate professor of psychology at Northwestern and the lead author of the investigation, stated: "GPS features on smartphone apps can tell you who is nearby and willing to be browsed."

He added this medium can then be exploited to arrange a face-to-face meeting.

While web-based interactions are a great way to start off a relationship, individuals should still try and hook up in person as soon as possible.

"There's no better way to figure out whether you're compatible with somebody than talking to them," Mr Finkel observed.

Paul Eastwick – assistant professor of psychology at Texas A&M University – and Benjamin Karney, professor of psychology at the University of California, also contributed to the study.
