Two groups who have completed an expedition to the South Pole are hoping to raise £500,000 for the Royal British Legion (RBL).

They set off two months ago and recreated the famous Scott-Amundsen challenge to see who could reach the point quickest, following the original routes exactly.

Prince William, who is a member of the armed forces, congratulated both teams for their efforts in respecting the memory of the original explorers.

"With the staunch support of the RBL, it is British soldiers who have achieved this great feat," he added.

Lietenant Colonel Henry Worsley, who led the Amundsen team, said it was an "absolute privilege" to "follow in the footsteps of the great polar pioneers".

All of the money collected will go towards the £50 million commitment made to the Ministry of Defence to help injured and sick servicemen and women.

The RBL also runs the poppy appeal, which raises millions every year.
