Nearly £14,000 has been raised for the Hailsham branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL).

A range of activities took place, including house-to-house collections, manned donation stations and special tables at Tesco and Quintins Shopping Centre, the Sussex Express reports.

Mike Weller, who is the poppy organiser and chairman of Hailsham RBL, noted he was happy with the effort so far, saying it had all been "worthwhile".

Over £15,000 was collected last year and Mr Weller thinks this total will be eclipsed once the money from poppy sales has been added.

At present, there are 360,000 members of the RBL, which seeks to look after the armed forces community.

The organisation has recently opened a new research centre at Imperial College in London.

Costing £8 million to construct – of which £5 million has been donated by the RBL – it will look to minimise the effect of blast injuries by developing intelligent combat boots.
