For a young Marine, the Arctic is such an amazing experience, and if they can operate <span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"284\" data-endindex=\"287\" data-paragraphid=\"7\">here<\/span> then they can operate <span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"311\" data-endindex=\"321\" data-paragraphid=\"7\">anywhere,&rdquo; <\/span>he said of the experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"8\"><span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"0\" data-endindex=\"0\" data-paragraphid=\"8\">&ldquo;<\/span>Even though the conditions are tough, the <a class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Bootneck&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;What &amp;lt;span class=&amp;quot;red-underline&amp;quot; data-startindex=&amp;quot;5&amp;quot; data-endindex=&amp;quot;9&amp;quot; data-paragraphid=&amp;quot;7&amp;quot;&amp;gt;Does &amp;lt;\/span&amp;gt;Bootneck Mean?Branch: Army\/Royal Marines&amp;lt;br\/&amp;gt;Definition: This is one of our favourites. Bootneck is a word that is used in the British Army to refer to a Royal Marine. If anything, you&amp;#039;ll find even the Marines calling themselves bootnecks too. The tradition dates back a couple of centuries when they used to wear a leather strap around their necks, and it looked more or less like a boot.&amp;lt;br\/&amp;gt;&amp;lt;span class=&amp;quot;red-underline&amp;quot; data-startindex=&amp;quot;0&amp;quot; data-endindex=&amp;quot;8&amp;quot; data-paragraphid=&amp;quot;10&amp;quot;&amp;gt;Example: Just yesterday I found out that he used to be a bootneck, now he seems more appealing than ever before. I have a serious thing for men who have served as Royal Marines.&nbsp;&amp;lt;\/span&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br\/&amp;gt;&amp;amp;nbsp;&lt;\/div&gt;\"  href=\"https:\/\/forcespenpals.net\/gb\/glossary\/what-does-bootneck-mean-whats-a-bootneck-forces-penpals\/\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'  tabindex='0' role='link'>bootneck<\/a> sense of humour is always so strong with smiles all round even after our ice drills all together. For <span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"154\" data-endindex=\"155\" data-paragraphid=\"8\">me<\/span> it&rsquo;s a humbling reminder of why the Royal Marines are so <span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"214\" data-endindex=\"223\" data-paragraphid=\"8\">special,&rdquo; <\/span>he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"9\">The Marines are fine-tuning their skills in Arctic warfare in Norway, as they train for different exercises with other NATO allies. The outfit is known for its prowess at handling extreme environments, including the icy hell that is the Arctic Circle. Imagine being stuck in rigorous, limit-testing conditions where the sun doesn&rsquo;t rise for two months<span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"351\" data-endindex=\"351\" data-paragraphid=\"9\">,<\/span> and temperatures can fall as low as <span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"389\" data-endindex=\"391\" data-paragraphid=\"9\">-35<\/span>&deg;C or more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"10\">This isn&rsquo;t just a one off for the bootnecks, given that the Marines actually do this every year! The exercise consists of over 35,000 soldiers from 28 different countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"11\">Speaking about the exercise, Lance Corporal Jack Cooper of 40 Commando said: &ldquo;This is my fourth Norway. Just surviving here presents unique challenges, but if you can operate here, you can operate <span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"197\" data-endindex=\"205\" data-paragraphid=\"11\">anywhere.<\/span>&ldquo;<\/p>\n<p class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"12\">Another Marine, 19-year-old Mark Clarke, said: &ldquo;Norway is an incredibly harsh environment, but with a few specialist skills and doing the basics well, sustaining and operating out here is a lot more manageable.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"13\">This is one of the toughest events in the world, but it surprises no one that the Royal Marines did it all with smiles on their faces.
