Some 9,000 people went to the set of Downton Abbey to raise money for a host of armed forces charities through an auction.

Hugh Bonneville and Jim Carter, who play Lord Grantham and Mr Carson respectively, were there to give autographs and meet fans, the Basingstoke Gazette reports.

The Royal British Legion – which helps current and ex-servicemen and women – and Help for Heroes are two of the third sector groups that will benefit from the event.

A script signed by the cast fetched £300, while a poster print went for £1,000.

The Countess of Carnarvon told the paper: "It has drawn attention to what the soldiers are doing so they are not forgotten. They give us a huge amount for our benefit so we should at least thank them."

Countrywise presenter Bettany Hughes said she felt the whole experience was very "moving".

On top of the auction, the London Scottish Regiment was on hand to give a performance with pipes and drums.
