An auction attended by a number of former sports stars has been held to raise money for an armed forces charity.

Some £11,500 was collected at the event, Get Wokingham reports, with the money going to the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) Benevolent Fund.

Ex-Chelsea player Ron 'Chopper' Harris was one of the celebrities in attendance, while a number of Premier League clubs donated gifts for the event.

Staff sergeants Danny McNeil and Mark Brown organised the auction and among the lots was an 800-page pictorial Opus from Tottenham Hotspur and a Ryder Cup pin flag.

Reading FC director of football Nicky Hammond – himself a former footballer – was on hand to chat to fans and guests alike.

Warrant Officer Mark Schorah, Captain Mick Cotton and AQMS Cliff Johnston were given most of the prizes on offer after riding to every Premier League stadium in six days.

The REME Benevolent Fund also sells Christmas cards to raise money for charitable efforts.
