An army fitness instructor has raised over £1,000 for Help for Heroes by running on a treadmill for ten hours.

Shaun Barnfather – who conducts fitness challenges in the 23 Pioneer Regiment – only stopped when using the toilet, the Newmarket Journal reports.

He said he was surprised to receive so much money from individuals and was happy that so many on them came out to cheer him on.

"You have only got to read the news to know that Help for Heroes is a good cause and to see what some people have gone through," Mr Barnfather observed.

The 24-year-old is currently based at Bicester in Oxfordshire.

Another event recently took place at the Celtic Manor resort – scene of Europe's 2010 Ryder Cup win – and raised £10,000.

The golfing tournamnet was organised by PowerPlay and featured some of the world's best stars, including former US Open champion Graeme McDowell.
