Residents near Wakefield are being urged to take part in a minute of silence for a fallen soldier.

The moment will be held after the funeral of Rifleman Luke Farmer at Wakefield Cathedral on February 5th, the Hemsworth and South Elmsall Express reported.

Rifleman Farmer was killed in an explosion near Sangin in Helmand province in January, alongside Corporal Lee Brownson, from County Durham.

Mourners wanting to attend the funeral are asked to be seated in the cathedral by 09:30 GMT on the day, or they can follow the funeral procession from Third Avenue and through Upton to Harewood Lane.

The silence will be observed at noon, with family and friends urging people to take part to commemorate the soldier.

Last week a rugby match was held in memory of Rifleman Farmer and fellow Upton resident James Priestley, 26, who died of skin cancer in January. The match also raised money for a cancer unit at St James’ Hospital in Leeds and Afghan Heroes, which supports soldiers at war in Afghanistan.
