Nine Royal Marines are speed marching from Wotton Bassett to a Staffordshire War Memorial in an effort to raise money for the Royal British Legion.

The men, who are currently deployed in Afghanistan, aim to collect £5,000 for completing the 100-mile trek to the National Memorial Arboretum.

Those participating are looking to garner cash for the organisation – which also runs the Poppy Appeal – as it helps injured servicemen and women.

Lance Corporal Robert French, who is one of those taking part in the fundraising, said: "Without the help that the Royal British Legion provides these lads and their families, [they] would find it a lot harder to recuperate."

David Trippett, Dan Lomas, Josh Watts, Jimmy Flurey, Ted Lucas, Scotty Everleigh, David Taggart and Azza Bailey are the other people looking to complete the challenge.

The official poppy single this year is by Abi Phillips and is called Coming Home.
