Help for Heroes, which aims to assist soldiers who have been injured on duty, has been described as a "massive support" by a troop who is raising money for the charity.

Andy Garthwaite lost his arm while serving in Afghanistan and since then has relied on the organisation for assistance, the Shields Gazette reports.

He is now training for the Great North Run with the aim of raising funds for Help for Heroes – established in 2007 – which has greatly aided his rehabilitation by providing gym equipment and offering a variety of support.

"They've even helped to adapt my car. This is my way of giving something back to them and to helping others who find themselves in a similar position to me," Mr Garthwaite says.

He claims he is looking forward to the gruelling run on September 18th and he will be joined by two friends for the 13.1-mile challenge.
