A range of officers serving in the RAF are gearing up to take on a charity challenge, which will see them run, cycle or row some 31,000 miles in Afghanistan.

The RAF Marham 31 squadron – also named Goldstars – hope their mission will earn £31,000 for three bodies, one of which is Help for Heroes, the Norfolk Eastern Daily Press reports.

They each take it in turns to head to the gym after carrying out their daily duties and they have almost completed half the distance of their mission.

Commanding officer Jim Mulholland says: "We are doing well and I don't think the mileage will be an issue, but the £31,000 is a different matter."

When they are not completing the fundraising mission, Goldstars are searching for improvised explosive devices in the desert, where temperatures can soar.

Another RAF representative showing support for soldiers is Rachael Cadman, who is currently attempting to complete the gruelling Enduroman Arch to Arc triathlon.
