An army penpal who corresponds with those serving in Afghanistan is showing how much she supports soldiers by raising money for Help for Heroes.

Holly Cannon-Taylor from Thatcham has an extra incentive for her work, as her brother is training to be in the Household Cavalry, reports Newbury Today.

She says: "I write to about three soldiers now. They talk about the outside world.

"They like to know what's going on because they don't have the internet so they are a bit closed off."

Previous fundraising efforts have created £3,200 for the charity and Ms Cannon-Taylor is now organising a black-tie event to show respect for those on the front line.

It will include a three-course meal, live music, comedy, magic and a silent auction, with the occasion scheduled for September 16th.

The Basildon Recorder recently reported that a grandmother is planning a parachute jump to raise funds for Help for Heroes, despite being afraid of heights.
