An army penpal and his wife have proved that love can blossom from correspondence, as the pair have just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Dave and Nan Cameron are now both in their mid-80s and recall their unique love story.

Mrs Cameron was working in a factory during the World War II when she decided to put her name and address on a crate of cigarettes that was being sent to soldiers on duty.

She hoped for a penpal and when Mr Cameron saw the message – which he received during service in Belgium in 1944 – he decided to reply.

They then met up in person while the soldier was on leave and went on to fall in love. They now have five children, 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

A similar tale was reported by the Derbyshire Times recently, which revealed Jack and Kath Bradley have been married for 60 years after striking up a penpal friendship in their 20s.
